what do red blood cells carry
oxygen from the heart to the body
what is the shape of a red blood cell
biconcave disc, that gives a large surface area for absorbing oxygen
what red pigment do they contain
haemoglobin
what does haemoglobin do in the lungs
binds to oxygen to become oxyhaemoglobin and then release oxygen into the cells
what do white blood cells do
defend against infection
what is the process called when white blood cells change shape to consume the microorganisms
phagocytosis
what do white blood cells produce
antibodies to fight microorganisms and antitoxins to neutralise any toxins produced
what do platelets do
help clot blood at a wound, to stop you bleeding and to stop microorganisms getting in
what are platelets made up of
small fragments of cells
what does plasma do
liquid that carries everything in blood
what does plasma carry
red and white blood cells and platelets, glucose and amino acids, carbon dioxide, urea, hormones, proteins, antibodies and anti toxins
