transpiration Flashcards
what does the phloem do?
transports food, glucose from leaves to the rest of the plant
transport in both directions
translocation
what does the xylem do?
transports water and minerals from the soil up the roots to the rest of the plant
transports upwards
made of dead cells strengthened with lignin
what is transpiration?
loss of water through leaves
evaporation and diffusion
what do guard cells do?
they open and close the stomata
they close at night and open at day time for photosynthesis
they are most commonly found underneath the leaf so not much water is lost through transpiration during photosynthesis
factors affecting transpiration
light intensity temperature surface area humid weather slows down air flow more wind more loss of water
layers of a leaf
waxy cuticle epidermis palisade mesophyll spongy mesophyll epidermis
what does palisade layer do?
contains chloroplasts which contains chlorophyll where photosynthesis can take place
function of the waxy cuticle?
protects plant from predators, stops plant from water loss
function of spongy mesophyll?
air spaces to allow diffusion of gases
contains xylem and phloem
