Transition Reaction Flashcards

Q

What happens in the transition reaction?

A

CO2 gets removed the pyruvate, leaving it simple as a 2C chain (decarboxylation).

Oxidation then occurs by NAD+ which causes the 2C chain to get converted to acetate (Oxidation)
[The NAD+ goes onto form NADH+ due to the loss of an electron]

Lastly, Acetyl-CoA gets attached to the Acetate, so it gets transported into the Mitochondria and begin the Krebs Cycle.

Q

What are the final results of this Transition reaction?

A

1 NADH+ and 1 CO2 is produced (though given two pyruvates were made from the glucose it would be 2 NADH+ and 2CO2).
