Define transient synovitis
Self-limiting condition characterised by the temporary inflammation of the synovial lining of the hip joint.
This often results in a limp in affected children
What is the relevant epidemiology of transient synovitis?
Children between 3-11yrs
Twice as common in males
What is the key aetiology of transient synovitis?
Post viral infection -> upper RTI -> 1 to 2 w prior
What are the key signs and symptoms of transient synovitis?
Acute onset of limp - avoidance fo weight bearing
Pain in the hip or referred knee pain
Mild to absent fever
History of preceding viral illness
What investigations should be done when transient synovitis is a differential?
Bloods - raised wbc and inflammatory markers in septic arthirits
Imaging - US of the joint can show effusion in both
Joint aspirate - if unable to rule out septic arthritis - transient synovitis would have an sbence of bacteria
What is the key management of transient synovitis?
Supportive - rest, analgesic and physiotherapy
What is the prognosis of transient synovitis?
Generally resolves in 7days with minimal risk of long-term damage to the joint
