What is nocturnal enuresis?
Nocturnal bedwetting - typical development until age five years
Primary - never achieved continence
Secondary - achieved for more than 6m then lost continence
What are the three aetiological factors that can contribute to nocturnal enuresis?
Disorder of sleep arousal - psychological distress
Poor bladder capacity or overactive bladder - constipation
Nocturnal polyuria - DM, UTI,
What are the risk factors for nocturnal enuresis?
Parental history
Obesity
Developmental delay
Spina bifida or cerebral palsy
What are the key investigations for nocturnal enuresis?
Detailed history, examination and a urine dip
Secondary cause? - urine osmolarity, renal ultrasound scan
What is the key management for nocturnal enuresis?
Advice - avoid caffeine, regular toiletting, behaviour star charts
Nocturesis alarm - takes 4-6w and 3m for complete
Medical - desmopression for over 7yrs
