Transgenics Flashcards
What is transgenic insect?
Insect that has a novel gene inserted into its DNA
What are the two types of transgenics
Stable and paratransgenesis
Whats is required for a stable transgenesis
Effector genes, regulation, germline transformation system, selection marker, drivers & population structure
What do refractory gene do?
Makes the mosquito unable to transmit the pathogen
What is a conditional sterility or lethal gene?
A gene that activated caused deleterious fitness effects
What is a candidate gene for analysis
to study the effects of gene overexpression, knock-out and mutations
How are transposable elements used?
Through the use donor and helper plasmids. Inverted repeats are inserted into donor plasmid, while the transposase gene is inserted into the helper plasmid, are then mixed together, and microinjected into the embryo.
When is the helper gene lost?
Meiosis
How efficient is transformation?
about 5%
How do you make transgenic fluorescent progeny?
Transgene for fluorescent most be in the germ line. Are then crossed with the wild type, and the progeny which are transgenic are selected using a marker
What is needed to spread a gene through a population?
A driver for the specific gene
