Transfer Of Skills / Optimising Transfer Flashcards
Types of transfer
Positive transfer
Negative transfer
Bilateral transfer
Proactive transfer
Retroactive transfer
Positive transfer
One skill helps the learning of another skill E.g. rounders over arm throw and javelin
Negative transfer
One skill hinders the learning of another skill E.g. badminton smash and tennis smash
Bilateral transfer
A skill learnt with a limb on in side of the body transferred to a limb on the other side of the body E.g. basketball dribble form right hand to left
Proactive transfer
Previously learnt skill helps the learning of a new skill E.g. goalkeeper drip kick in football and drop kick in rugby
Retroactive transfer
Newly learnt skill helps previously learnt skill E.g. javelin helps cricket ball throw
Memory method for optimising positive transfer
SWEEPP
SWEEPP- S
Similar skills must be taught close together E.g. teaching javelin and rounders in same term
SWEEPP- W
Well learned first skill- is essential before achieving positive transfer E.g. over arm throw must be effective before transferring it to javelin
SWEEPP- E
Emphasise/ point out similar skills E.g. hip twist for over arm throw and hip twist die javelin
SWEEPP- E
Elements of practice same as the game E.g. adding in defenders when practicing short corners in hockey
SWEEPP- P
Positive reinforcement- praise the javelin thrower when they successfully transfer over arm throw action to javelin throw
SWEEPP- P
Progression- build up skills progressively, don’t introduce to many new movement patterns at once
How to minimise negative transfer
OPPOSITE- teaching conflicting skills close together, not well learned first skill, skills seem similar but are not, practice environment different from game environment
