Transduction and phase defence Flashcards
Define transduction
Bacteriophage accidedntly packaging host DNA and delivering it to another host
What is meant by specialised transduction?
Will pick up a gene adjacent to the entry site only
What is meant by generalised transduction?
Any gene can be transferred
Give an example of a generalised transductor
P22 which infects s.typhimurium
What are the main usages of transduction?
Can be used for investigating gene linkages
What defence systems does a bacteria have against phages?
- Restriction and modification systems
- Abi systems
- Crispr
What are ABI defence systems?
Prevent phage propogation by initiating dormancy or death upon infection, therefore protecting the community
What is the CRISP defence system
Acts as an adaptive immune system, where it will add spacer sequences within its genome, confusing the bacteriophage
