Transcription and Translation Flashcards
What type of RNA is used in transcription?
mRNA
Where does transcription occur?
In the nucleus
Describe the process of Transcription.
Helicase unwinds the DNA.
RNA polymerase copies the antisense strand, to make a complementary strand.
This detaches from the DNA, this is mRNA.
It leaves the nucleus
Define Translation
The synthesis of a polypeptide in response to the coded information.
What are stop and start codes?
They are codons that show where the RNA should be read from
Describe translation/protein synthesis
mRNA is engulfed by a ribosome, in the cytoplasm.
A tRNA molecule (clover shaped thing) lines up its anticodons against complementary mRNA.
Peptide links are formed and make a polypeptide chain.
Define transcription
The transfer of coded information from the nucleus to the cytoplasm
