Mucus and CF Flashcards
What does the sodium ion channel do?
Allows Na+ to flow through the membrane by facilitated diffusion
What does the CFTR channel do?
Allows Cl- (chloride ions) to flow through.
What does the sodium pump do?
Pumps Na+ out of the basal end of the membrane
What effect does the CFTR channel have on the sodium ion channel?
When the CFTR channel is open, the sodium ion channel CANNOT open
Describe a normal situation (mucus is normal)?
Sodium ion pump open
Sodium ion channel open
CFTR channel closed
Describe a situation with dehydrated mucus
CFTR channel is open
Sodium ion channel closes
Sodium ion pump open
Describe a CF situation
CFTR is absent or not functional
Sodium ion channel is always open
Sodium pump is open
What three channels/pumps are in epithelial cells?
Sodium ion channel
CFTR channel
Sodium pump
