Transcription Flashcards
What enzyme synthesizes the mRNA
RNA polymerase
What DNA strand does RNA polymerase attach to
The template strand (3’ to 5’ strand)
Direction mRNA is synthesized
5’ to 3’
What is a promoter region
A special nucleotide sequence that lies just before a gene
Where does transcription happen
Nucleus
Transcription prokaryote vs eukaryote
Prokaryote
- Happens throughout cell
- Single type of RNA polymerase transcribes all genes
- Bases added quickly
- Less complex promoters
- Protein binds to the mRNA and cleaves or mRNA binds with itself during termination
- No introns
- mRNA ready to be translated
Eukaryote
- In nucleus
- Different RNA polymerases used
- Bases added slowly
- Promoters are immediately upstream of protein-coding genes and more complex
- Nuclear proteins bind to poly uracil site for termination
- Have introns and exons
- results in pre-mRNA which must be modified
