What is a leash for?
A leash is a tool, not a tether.
It is used for communication between the dog and handler

What is a slip leash?
How are they used?
A leash and collar in one where the collar works similar to a slip collar.
Excellent for use with training unfamiliar dogs.
Easy to remove when putting a dog back in a kennel.
Flat nylon slips are used in kennels to transfer dogs.
Agility they use them because they are easy to get on and off.
Can be used as a make shift catch pole.
What is a tab leash?
How long are they?
How are they used?
A short leash that attaches to a dog’s collar.
Tabs are used as a Segway from on leash to off leash training.
Handling a dog in agility so the dog won’t get caught up in the leash while running obstacles.
By clients in their home as a method of being able to reinforce commands.
What is a long line?
What are the uses?
Parachute cord is light line.
Good for teaching recalls and stays.
Bridge to off leash work.
33 foot used for Schutzhund tracking.
Beginning training with remote collar training.
What is a flexi leash?
What is it used for?
Why is it bad for training?
A leash with a retractable line.
Good for pottying a dog and for general exercise.
Not good for training because of the constant tension it gives the dog.
What are the three types of collars?
Flat collar
Martingale collar
Slip collar
What is a flat collar
How are they fitted?
What are they used for?
Most common type of collar.
Attaches with a buckle or a snap and has a ring to attach the dog’s tags.
Needs to be comfortable for the dog. Fitted high up on the neck.
Easy to rotate around and slide two fingers underneath and rotate.
- exercises that you want the dog to pull.
Narcotic detection, dock diving and protection training.

Greyhound collar
Pinch collar
Starmark collar
What is a greyhound collar?
What is it used for?
How is it fitted?
Nylon martingale collar
Adjustable no slip collar.
Made of nylon.
Difficult for dog to back out of.
Good for breed with thicker necks and smaller heads. Bulldogs, greyhounds.
Should slip over dog’s head snugly
Limited closure preventing it from getting too tight.
When you pull on it the two rings from the collar should not touch - too loose.
Form a triangle.
What is a pinch collar?
What is it used for?
How is it fitted?
Martingale collar with prongs that face inward.
Also known as a pinch or German collar.
Made of metal.
Power steering for dogs.
Self correcting collar when a dog pulls.
Use less force then a slip collar.
Pinch collar pinches all the way around.
Put it on. Pinch links and pull apart. Fit on dogs neck and pinch links together.
Leash attaches to D-ring. Flat swivel ring.
Proper fitting:
Sit high on dogs neck.
When pulled all three rings shouldn’t touch. Form triangle.
Proper fitting dog shouldn’t even know he has it on.
May make clients nervous. Have them try it around their leg.
Dogs are not as sensitive as humans.
What is a Starmark collar?
What is it used for?
How is it fitted?
Flat on the outside with plastic prongs on the inside.
Works same way as a pinch collar.
Less aversive. Gives less of a correction then a pinch.
Good for older puppies and softer/sensitive dogs.
Clients may be more willing to use.
Fitted same way as a pinch. Form triangle.
Angle the links and unsnap by using a left-to-right rocking motion.
Links must be angled to connect links.
What is a slip collar?
How is it used?
How is it fitted?
Choke collar
Offers less correction then Starmark or pinch.
Not good choice for dogs that pull. Amount of pop and release would have to be very strong to stop the behavior.
End up learning to avoid correction by pulling hard.
Takes skill to learn proper pop and release technique. Clients are usually not skilled.
Sit high on dogs neck.
Proper fit. 2 inches of excess hang.
Should be loose except during correction.
Dog on left. Make a “P” and slip over dogs neck.
Dog on right. Make a “Q”
Head halti and gentle leader.
Management tool not a training tool.
When removed, Dogs will revert back to original behavior.
Where the head goes the body will follow.
Can cause neck strain.
Takes time to get the dog used to it. May try to rub or paw it off.
Proper fitting is important or it can damage the dogs neck and eyes.
Hard to fit on short nosed breeds.
Halti good for dogs that mouth. Halti closes dog’s mouth.
Good for mouthy puppies.
Muzzles
What are they?
How are they used?
Bite prevention. Type of problem will dictate type of muzzle used.
Husher or Mickey is a mesh muzzle used for transport, vets and feisty Fido programs.
Basket muzzle often made of leather is what police dogs use.
Metal muzzles are good for training because they can eat and drink. Can get plenty of air but may restrict panting.
