House training is IMPORTANT and Immediate.
When should you have a plan in place? And why?
Before you bring your new puppy home
- implement it right away.

Why is punishing an accident, after the fact, is ineffective and futile?
Puppies think only about what they are doing and what is going on at that exact moment.
Punish after the fact will confuse the dog.
How can punishing your dog when you catch him in the act be a bad idea?
What must you do first?
Puppy might think you are punishing him for peeing in front of you. = afraid to relieve himself in your presence.
Establish a reward history for eliminating in a designated area, in front of you.
Clicker training to mark behavior quickly and consistently.
Why use a leash to potty train?
Easy to take puppy to designated area.
If you don’t use a leash, puppy may be so distracted outside it forgets to potty. Will then have an accident when you take him back in.
What are some pre-elimination behaviors?f
Sniffing, circling, squatting
What do you do if you catch puppy eliminating in the house?
How many accidents will it take for him to understand that it’s unacceptable?
Distract him with a shaker can or other noise and immediately take him to designated area. Reward a successful potty.
Catch him at least 5 times.
2 ways to address house training if you have to leave puppy alone.
Crate training
Confining - small bathroom etc.
use a litter box with same material they are using outside. Eg grass - use sod
Dogs eliminate on softer surfaces
What does house training require?
Patience
Persistence
Understanding - of your dog’s instinctive habits
