What is training?
The process that involves increasing the knowledge and skills of a worker to enable them to do their job more effectively.
Why is training important?
- It allows employees to acquire new skills
- It improves existing ones
- It increases productivity and be better leaders
- Improve employee motivation
What is induction training?
Training given to new employees when they first started the job.
What does induction training provide?
It helps new recruits settle in and become familiar with their new surroundings.
What will happen if firms fail to provide adequate induction training?
Staffs may become anxious resulting poor production and at worst, they might quit.
What might involve in induction training?
- A complete tour of work place
- Health and safety training
- Company polices (Dress codes, Disciplinary procedures, holidays)
- Company history, aims and objectives
- Introduction to senior staffs
- Introduction to job and direct work colleagues
What is on-the-job training?
Training that takes place while doing the job.
What are the methods of on-the-job training?
- Watching another worker
- Mentoring
- Job rotation
What does watching another worker involve?
It involves new recruits watching and copying the actions of the experienced employee.
What is mentoring?
Where people with a lot of experience advise new people in work.
What is job rotation?
Where employees alternate between different jobs during the course of their employment
What does job rotation provide?
It provide employee to learn different skills required and gain broad knowledge of how the business work.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of on-the-job training?
Advantages
- Output is being produced
- Relavant because trainees learn by actually doing the job
- Cheaper
- Can be easy to organize
Disadvantages
- Output may lost (if workers make mistakes, and through time guiding them)
- May be stressful for worker
- Staff may get frustrated if they are unpaid trainers
- Could be danger to others
What are advantages and disadvantages of off-the-job training?
Advantages
- Output is not affected
- Learning cannot be distracted by work
- Training could take place out of work hours
- Customers and other are not put at risk
Disadvantages
- No output
- Expensive
- Some aspects of work can’t be taught off job
- It may take time to organize
What is off-the-job training?
Training that takes place away from the work area.
