What is an appraisal?
A formal meeting between an employee and the employer to discuss the employees work performance
What is a one to one appraisal?
-formal review of an employees performance by their line manager
-review on an employees progress towards targets
-time taken to set targets for coming year
What is 360 degree appraisal?
-evaluation of an employees performance that considers feedback and opinions from line managers, subordinates, peers and the employees themselves
-each person is given identical questions about employee and the answers are compared
What is peer to peer appraisal?
-excludes an employees line manager
-other workers in similar or same position are asked to provide feedback on different parts of an employees perfromance
What are the benefits of appraisal?
-targets can be set which will motivate employees as they have a goal to work towards
-can motivate employees as employers have a chance too acknowledge any good performance which can lead to less staff turnover
-training needs can be identified which will help employees skills/abilities leading to higher work standard
-strong relationships are formed between manager and employee as they’re given the opportunity for a supportive discussion
What are the costs of appraisals?
-can be very time consuming for managers to carry out appraisals with every member of staff
-if the appraisal isn’t positive employees may become demotivates and lead to decrease in production
-lots of identified development points can result in additional stress for the employee
What are the benefits of training employees?
- the employee will feel values within the business therefore increased motivation
-the employee will be more efficient and therefore the quality of output will increase
-well trained employees means fewer customer complaints
-employees are better prepared to cope with change in the business
What are the costs of training employees?
-lower productivity and output during training
-training can be expensive and time consuming to conduct
-employees may leave the business for better paid positions once trained
What are apprenticeships?
-learn on the job combined with days at college and gain a formal qualification
-gain practical experience whilst learning skills and knowledge
What are benefits of apprenticeships?
-professional qualifications are gained while working and learning on the job
-training is specifically tailored to suit the firms needs and job role
-less costly as training takes place while performing the job
What are costs of apprenticeships?
-experienced staff members need to supervise the apprentice which can be time consuming
-apprentices may make mistakes while they are training which could harm the reputation of the company
-no guaranteed job security once apprenticeship is complete
What is a guaranteed training scheme?
-programme offered by companies to people who have recently gained a degree
-allow graduate to experience different aspects of the business through training
What are the benefits of a graduate training scheme?
-gives graduates experience of a working enviroment
-can gain the skills required to work permanently
-can move about and experience different departments and gain a wide range of skills
What are the costs of a graduate training scheme?
-not guarantee of a job at the end of the training scheme
-graduate might leave once training is complete to move to another company or better opportunity
