People got their news from newspapers and radios, + leisure time in terms of media was dominated by the cinema

UK tv broadcasters were routinely broadcasting the majority of their schedules in colour
Family spent time watching TV
What was media like in the 80s?
Some homes has satellite TV + some newspapers included colour pictures
Magazines expanded into health + lifestyle titles
Gaming was popular in arcades then in the home
Music still bought on vinyl
What was media like in the 90s?
Widespread use of home computers + connecting to internet
With the internet, content was text based but this changed with arrival of web 2.0 + access to broadband and wireless technology
What are some characteristics of web 2.0?
- Portable, accessable, affordable
- Increased human communication + connectivity through collab networks + info sharing (may be done thru wikis + crowdfunding)
- Increase in availability to access web content which may have been hard to find previously
What are wikis?
Website/database developed collaboratively by community of users, allowing any user to add + edit content
What is crowdfunding?
Funding a project/venture through raising money from large num of ppl who each donate small amount, typically via internet
What are traditional media industries often organised into?
Huge conglomerates - gives them massive economic power
