How are the majority of media industries self-regulated?
Organisations (IPSO, VSC, PEGI, BBFC, ASA) are paid for + managed by industries themselves, with different levels of independence
What is IPSO?
Independent Press Standards Organisation - Regulates magazines + newspapers that have signed up to Editorsβ Code of Practise
What does IPSO do?
Promotes + upholds professional standards of journalism in UK + supports public when they think editors code has been breached
Can make news + magazines make adjustments
What is an alternative press regulator for those not joining IPSO?
IMPRESS - The Financial Times + The Guardian have joined this
What is VSC?
Video Standards Council administrates the PEGI system - Responsible for age ratings of games in UK
How does the VSC rate games?
Through sub-body = Games Rating Authority (GRA)
What is PEGI?
Pan European Game Information = Game content rating system to help consumers make decisions when buying games, through age recommendations + content descriptions
What is the BBFC?
British Board of Film Classification = Responsible for national class of films shown at cinema + any videos released on physical media in UK
What power does the BBFC have?
Has its own rating system + has limited power to impose edits or βbanβ films
What is ASA?
Advertising Standards Authority is self-regulator of UK advertising industry + is self-funded
What is ASA responsible for?
Regulating UK ads through investigations of complaints + deciding whether ads break advertising standards codes
