Refers to interrelationships between countries connected by trade, communication, and cultural experiences
What is an example of globalisation?
Global sales of games, films, + TV combined with influence of internet has led to higher profit for some media
What could happen in an increasingly globalised world?
Local cultures risk losing unique qualities + be replaced by ‘single stranded’ culture - known as cultural homogenisation
What is cultural imperialism?
Refers to process where 1 country dominates media consumption of other nations + as a result, influences other nations’ values + ideologies
What is an example of cultural imperialism?
US film + TV has caused UK to have increased prominence of halloween
How are international agreements important to media producers?
Theres international controls + regulations that constrain nationality-based media, but these are usually voluntary + non-binding
Who is the only UK government-backed regulator?
Ofcom (office of communications)
What are the powers of Ofcom?
They have power to regulate TV, aspects of broadcasting (broadband services, radio + mobile spectrums, etc), radio
No other responsibility for other parts of media apart from those appearing on TV or radio
