Traction - Comeng Flashcards
What are the primary safety apparatus?
Trip
Emergency application Valve
Control governor
Hand/Foot pilot valve
Anti-neutralisation device
VICERS
What are the secondary safety apparatus?
Foot pilot valve
Emergency pilot valve
Emergency control governor
Control governor bypass push button
How do you isolate the primary safety apparatus in the driving motor?
Turn the Red EC cock
How would you isolate the primary and secondary safety systems in a non driving cab?
Turn the yellow TECHAV cock
Where are the spring park brakes located on a comeng?
Motor cars only
Wheels 1, 3, 5 and 7
How do you isolate the spring park brake?
Turn the spring park brake isolating cocks for the desired set (1,7 and 3,5)
When do park brakes activate automatically?
Either:
- When reverser is set to “off”
- After 60 seconds of the reverser being set to neutral
What are the 2 control types for the spring park brake?
Local - motor car only (a side)
Train-lined - all brakes on consist (b side)
Green = off
Red = on
How do you manually release the spring park brake?
Knorr:
Single anticlockwise turn via knurled knob on cylinder
Westcode:
6-8 anticlockwise turns via socket and brace
How do you manually apply the spring park brake?
Knorr:
No manual applying
Westcode:
40-60 clockwise turns via socket & brace
How do we reset the VICERS application valve?
Reduce brake pipe pressure below 25 kPa
Be stationary (0 km/h)
Wait 10 seconds
Press VICERS acknowledgement button
How do we test the VICERS system?
Fully charged brake pipe (500 kPa+) reverser in “off” position
Have trip lowered and set
BVICS is open
Blue Key can then be turned to “test” in the VICERS key switch
How do we cut in on a comeng?
Open BVICS, charge brake pipe to approx 400 kPa (brakes start coming off)
Operate trip lever down (discharge air from trip)
Put brake into emergency (exhaust all air)
Put brake to run & release (recharge brake pipe)
Brake to step 7
How do we cut out on a comeng?
Train must be stationary
Trip lever to up (discharge air from trip)
Brake into emergency (exhaust all air)
Brake to run & release (charge brake pipe)
Brake to emergency (exhaust all air)
Close BVICS
Brake to run and release
What are the 4 devices powered by 415 vAC on a comeng?
Saloon lighting
Headlights
Air conditioners
Traction Cooling fans
From left to right, what are the components of the brake unit?
Seven step relay valve
Variable load valve
Restricted application limiting valve & ball check valve
Dump valve
Release ensuring valve
Bypass check valve
Triple valve
What are the reasons the FDCL might be be flashing?
- Door system faults
- Rear taillights turned off (centre)
- PLC tripped in trailing car
- Uncoupled; coupler sensor believes coupled
- Second BVICS open
- Auxiliary circuit breaker tripped on other cab
- control circuit breaker tripped in rear cab
- open circuit in train cable
What is the PLC? What items are connected to it?
Programmable logic controller
- driver door indicator lights
- door closing relay delay
- door chimes
- secondary release feature
- door loop bypass
- foot pilot valve
Where is the PLC located?
Above door 3 in all cars
At what pressures does the control governor open and close at?
Open = 310 - 340 kPa (+- 20)
Closed = 400 - 430 kPa (+-20)
What are the components of the brake controller?
Release prevention valve
Regulating valve
Relay valve
Charging valve
Lock out magnet & ball check valve
Emergency exhaust valve
What equipment operates on 1500vDC?
Air compressor
