What is the purpose of traction?
A
Immobilize fracture or a joint
- Alleviate pain and muscle spasm
- Prevent or correct deformities
- Promote Healing

Types of Traction: Skin
A
- Skin- generally used for short-term treatment. Tape, boots or splints are applied directly to the skin to maintain alignment, assist in reduction and help reduce muscle spasms in the injured extremity.

Types of Traction: Skeletal
A
Usually in place for longer periods than skin traction. Is used to align injured bones and joints or to treat joint contractures. It provides a long term pull that keeps the injured bones and joints aligned.

- Maintain straight alignment of ropes and pulleys
- Assure that weights hang free
- Frequently inspect skin for breakdown
- Maintain position for countertraction
- Encourage movement of unaffected areas
- Investigate every complaint immediately and thoroughly
- Maintain continuous pull
- Clean pins with half-strength peroxide and sterile swabs 1-2 times a day.
