Burns Flashcards
Types of burn injury
Thermal & Chemical
Thermal burn = caused by flame, flash, scald or contact with hot objects. Severity depends on them pr burning agent and duration of contact
Chemical burn = contact with acids, alkalis and organic compounds. Eyes can also be injured if splashed with the chemical. Alkali burns are more difficult to manage
Types of burn injury: Smoke and inhalation injuries
From breathing hot wire or noxious chemicals can cause respiratory tract damage.
There are three types:
Metabolic Asphyxiation: majority of deaths at a fire, inhaling Coke elements primarily CO or hydrogen cyanide. O2 delivery is impaired resulting in hypoxia and ultimately death when carboxyhemoglobin rise.
Upper Airway Injury: injury to the mouth, oropharynx and or larynx. Injury by thermal burn - hot air, steam or smoke. Oropharynx and larynx = redness, blistering and edema.
What is a burn?
Injury to the tissues of the body caused by heat chemicals electric current or radiation
Burn depth ***
Superficial burn depth (first degree) = only the epidermis is affected, pain and redness, pain
Superficial or deep partial-thickness burn (second degree) = affects the epidermis and the dermis, lots of pain
Full thickness burns (3rd and 4th degree) = affects all the way down to the muscle it has a white gray color
Burn Size**
Rule of 9’s
First intervention of burns
Preserve the airway
