Trace Minerals Part 2 Flashcards
What is the genetic version of iron toxicity?
hemochromatosis
What is hemochromatosis?
toxic build up of iron due to genetic inability to properly metabolize it
Who is at risk for iron toxicity (non genetic)?
supplemental iron overdose in kids
What is the symptom for iron toxicity?
organ damage from iron deposistion
What is the cause of iron deficiency in athletes?
inadequate intake, inadequate heme intake, hemolysis due to pounding the pavement, ruptured muscles, etc
Who is at risk for iron deficiency?
kids, adolescents, females of childbearing age, pregnant woment
What are the symptoms of iron deficiency?
pallor, fatigue, decreased cognition, short attention span, depressed immune system
Can iron deficiency be found in people without anemia?
yes
How are good sources of iron?
seafood, lean meat, poultry, legumes, vegetables, black strap molasses, dried fruit, whole grain/enriched breads
What is the function of iron for heme proteins?
transport oxygen in lungs to tissues
What is the function of iron for nonheme proteins?
transports and stores oxygen in muscle
How do we excrete iron?
GI tract (sloughed), blood loss, bile
When iron stores are low, what enzyme is most prevalent?
transferrin
When iron stores are high, what enzymes is most prevalent?
ferritin
Where is iron stored?
liver
