Toxins Flashcards
What is the Enzymatic activity of Cholera Toxin?
ADP ribolsylates eucaryotic adenylate cyclase Gs
What is biological effects of Cholera Toxin?
Activates adenylate cyclase. Increases level of cAMP which promotes secretion of fluid in intestinal epithelium leading to diarrhea
What is enzymatic activity of Diphtheria toxin?
ADP ribolyates elongation factor 2
What is Biological effects of Diphtheria toxin?
Inhibits protein synthesis in animal cells resulting in death of the cell
What is enzymatic activity of Pertussis toxin?
ADP ribosylates adenylate cyclase Gi regulatory protein
What is Biological effects of Pertussis toxin?
Blocks inhibition of adenylate cyclase, increasing levels of cAMP affects hormone activity and reduces phagocytic activity
What is the Enzymatic activity of E. Coli Heat Labile Toxin (LT)?
ADP ribosylates adenylate cyclase GS regulatory protein
What is enzymatic activity of Shiga toxin?
Glycosidase cleavage of rRNA
What is Biological effects of Shiga toxin?
inactivates the 60s ribosomal protein and leads to inhibition of protein synthesis. Leads to Diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis and Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS)
What is enzymatic activity of Pseudomonas Exotoxin A?
ADP ribosylates elongation factor 2 (just like diphtheria toxin)
What is the biological effects of Pseudomonas Exotoxin A?
Inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible cells, resulting in death of the cell
What is the enzymatic effects of Botulinum toxin?
Zn++ dependent protease acts on synaptobreven at motor neuron ganglioside
What is biological effects of Botulinum toxin?
Inhibits presympathetic Ach release from peripheral cholinergic neurons. Resulting in FLACCID paralysis
What is the enzymatic effects of Tetanus toxin?
Zn++ dependent protease acts on synaptobrevin in CNS
What is the biological effects of Tatanus toxin?
Inhibits NT release from inhibitory neurons in the CNS. Resulting in SPASTIC paralysis
What is enzymatic effects of Staph Aureus Exfoliatin toxin B?
Cleaves desmoglein 1, and cadherin found in desmosomes in the epidermis (superantigen)
What is the biological effects of Staph. Aureus Exfoliatin toxin B?
Seperation of the stratum granulosum of the epidermis. Between layers and the superficial dead space
