Toxicology Flashcards
What are the types of hazards?
Physical, Biological and chemical.
What are Biological hazards?
Those that cause illnesses because of their infectious properties. Ex: Anthrax
What are chemical hazards?
The amount of exposure and dose determines the toxic reaction. EX: water inhales in large quantities or oxygen inhaled in a hyperbaric environment.
What is toxicology?
The scientific study of poisons.
What are the types of exposures?
Acute & chronic
What is threshold limit values (TLV)?
Concentrations of a chemical that will produce no effects to individuals who are exposed for 8 hours a day.
What is short term exposure limits (TLV-STEL)?
Concentration of chemicals that are allowed for exposures time of 15 min during the workday.
What is ceiling concentration (TLV-C)
Concentration of a chemical that must never be exceeded during any part of the workday.
What ways can a toxin enter the body?
Inhalation, ingestion & absorption
What is the most likely method of getting a toxin into the body in the flight environment?
Inhalation
Toxicity will be affected by________, __________ and _________?
Atmospheric pressure, temperature and humidity.
TRUE or FALSE
Hazardous fumes become more toxic at higher altitudes
True
TRUE or FALSE
Low temperatures make toxic agents less problematic
True
TRUE or FALSE
Chemicals are less absorbed through wet (perspiration) skin than cool dry skin.
False, chemicals are more rapidly absorbed through wet skin.
What is one of the most common and toxic of substances in the aviation environment produce by engine exhaust?
Carbon monoxide
