Toxic metals Flashcards
toxic metals
aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, nickel
also called heavy metals
risks of toxic metals
accumulate in brain, kidneys, liver, immune system, and other bod tissues, where they can severely disrupt normal function
how much of US suffers from heavy metal poisoning
estimated to be 25%
toxic metals damage in 3 main ways-
backing activity of enzymes, displacing minerals, increasing oxidative stress which negatively affects almost all tissues and functions in the body
heavy metal testing
measuring blood levels shows current but doesn’t show total body load which better correlates to toxicity
hair mineral testing can show low levels in hair but body levels could be high
challenge testing is best way
