What is eco tourism
It is based on wildlife and local culture
It benefits local people and protect the environment sometimes using the profits that it makes
Who are the Ese’eja tribe
Live in amazon forest in Peru
Live in a reserve set aside for special purpose so their rainforest home is protected
They are in the ecotourism business
How has life changed for the Ese’eja tribe?
They were hunter gatherers.
They now grow crops and keep cattle.
They gather Brazil nuts to sell.
They only hunt and fish a little bit now.
How does life in the reserve work?
In 1996 they signed a contract with a tour operator. They built a lodge, the tour operator brings tourists. They share decisions and profits from selling their goods and many work in the lodge. Their animals are protected.
Why is Eco tourism successful? Give 4 reasons
It brings money to the local people
It keeps their forest and hunting skills in use.
The locals learn new skills of trade and language.
The local wildlife and habitat is protected.
What is sustainable tourism?
It means a place where people and culture are respected
How does sustainable tourism work?
- Tourists learn about local cultures and habitats
- The local people benefit from the tourist trade
- Local resources are used in a manageable way
- Wildlife and environment are not harmed
- Infrastructure development is sensitive to the local environment.
- The tourism can continue into the future without harming the environment and local economy.
Not everyone thinks eco tourism is a good thing?
If you want to protect a place then don’t go there and leave the local people alone to live in their traditional manner if they want.

Activities that tourists take part in eg hotels, airports, seaside, ice cream etc

A tourist is a person who travels to a place but doesn’t stay there.
What does a place need to be a tourist attraction?
- It needs something that that people want to see or do e.g. Beaches, good food, statues and historic buildings.
- It needs accommodation, catering, transport.
Why has tourism grown?
- Travel technology has improved- more ways to travel
- People have more disposable income
- The availability of holidays has increased.
- The media raises interest in more different places.
- People have more spare time.
3 good things about tourism
- People can experience different languages and cultures
- Improves economy , income from selling eg crafts, ice cream
- More jobs at the tourist destinations
3 bad things about tourism
- The best tourist jobs rarely go to the local people
- Jobs are seasonal and not well paid so no work for much of the year
- Tourists produce lots of waste: rubbish, pollution from cars, wasted water. Local people have to pay to clear it up.
