What is an Air Mass
An air mass is a massive block of air that moves over land and sea.
They are classified by where they come from.
Where do the air masses that affect UK weather come from and why do they combine?
Polar
Tropical
Continental
Maritime
They combine because polar and tropical describe regions of origin and maritime and continental describe the land and sea scape they might travel across on their way towards the U.K.
Describe the features of the air masses?
Polar maritime is cold and icy but wet and moist
Tropical maritime is hot and warm but wet and moist
Tropical continental is hot and warm but dry
Polar continental is cold and icy but dry
Where does the coldest air come from?
And the wettest?
And the warmest?
And the driest?
From the North Pole
From the maritime- sea or ocean
From the tropics
From the continents
What weather do the air masses bring?
Polar maritime brings in winter brings
snow, frost, cold rain, fog
In summer it brings floods
Tropical continental brings heatwaves in summer
