What is Vouvray AOC famous for?

A

Vouvray is located on the North side of the Loire River.

Soil: Tuffeau subsoil (name for the particular type of limestone; Porous, soft lime with low density, strong but also malleable and well draining). 
Aubis topsoil (yellowish clay, mixed with limestone and flint)

Minimum of 95% Chenin Blanc. (Arbois is permitted in very small amounts)

Dry, semi dry, sweet and sparkling method traditional wines are produced here.

What is Mountlouis-sur-loire AOC famous for?

A

Located opposite Vouvray on the south bank of the Loire river.

Soil: Similar to Vouvray, Subsoil of Tuffeau and top soil of Perruches (clay mixed with silex, flint,)

100% Chenin blanc

Dry, semi dry, sweet and sparkling method traditional wines are produced here.

In 2013, the laws changed not allowing any wine made in Montlouis to be labeled as Vouvray (even if the grapes were grown in Vouvray) they can only be labeled as Vin de France.

What is Chinon AOC famous for?

A

Chinon is an area on the south of the river Loire and is situated facing the Vienne river (another tributary of the Loire)

Grapes: (R) Cabernet Franc (minimum 90% blend with cabernet sauvignon)

(W) Chenin blanc (dry Chinon blanc)

There are 3 main soil types in the region.
o Gravel
o Sand
o Clay limestone

What is Bourgueil AOC?

A

Situated north of the Loire river

Maritime Climate (due to the location of the Bourgueil region being at the area where the Loire river opens it is still influenced by the Atlantic coast coming up the river)

Soils are more limestone rich than that of Chinon.

Only makes red wine

Grapes: Cabernet franc (minimum 90% with cabernet sauvignon)

What is St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil AOC?

A

Smaller AOC for wines made from an area just on the north west tip of the Bourgueil region.

The soils here are more sand rich.

The wines are more fruit driven and to be drank younger.

Considered less superior to Bourgueil AOC.
