Torque Converter Vocabulary Flashcards
Coupling phase
turbine and impeller are close to the same speed
Flex plate
Connected the torque converter to the engine
Fluid coupling
A device that uses fluid to transmit power to the driveline
Hydraulic retarder
Hydraulic oil under pressure to slow the machine down
Impeller
Drive element of the torque converter
Apart of the torque converter housing
Rotates with the flywheel/flex plate
Lock up clutch
Locks the turbine to the converter shell
100% efficiency, direct drive
Lock up clutch disc
Friction disc used in a lock up clutch
Lock up clutch piston
Hydraulically actuated piston that applies the lock up clutch
One way clutch
Allows rotation in one direction but locks in the opposite (turbine side)
Rotary flow
Fluid flow inside the torque converter that follows the rotation of the housing
Split ring guide
Ring attached to the impeller and the turbine and creates circular fluid passage
Stall speed
Maximum speed the engine can drive the torque converter impeller with the turbine held stationary
Torque multiplication phase
Occurs when the impeller is turning significantly faster than the turbine
Torus
Hollowed out donut shape of the rear of the converter housing and the turbine
Vortex flow
Flow of fluid from the impellers through the turbine, through the stator and back to the impeller
(Turbine is stopped)
