Drive Axle Vocabulary Flashcards
Amboid gear
Pinion mounted above the centreline of the crown gear
Backlash
Clearance between two meshing gears
Carrier
Holds the support bearings for drive axle gearing
Controlled traction differential
Use spring loaded clutch pack to prevent wheel slippage
Differential gear set
Two side gears, four pinion gears allows for speed difference of two axle shafts
Differential spider
Holds the differential pinion or spider gears
Also called differential cross
Full floating axle
Carries none of the machine weight
Heel (crown gear)
End of the crown gear (furthest from the center of axis)
Hypoid gearing
Pinion below center line of the crown gear
Locking differential
Prevents differential action from occurring
Prevents one side gear from spinning
Can be engaged or disengaged by the operator
Root (crown gear)
Radius shape between bottoms of the two teeth
Semi floating axle shaft
Carriers entire weight of the machine on its outer end
Side gears
Splined to the axles
Toe (crown gear)
End of the crown gear closest to center of it’s axis
Top land (crown gear)
The apex of the tooth
Tooth pattern question
Pinion out too far (excessive face) how to adjust?
Move pinion inward towards the crown gear, readjust backlash
Tooth pattern question
Pinion in too far (excessive flank) how to adjust?
Move pinion out and readjust ring gear for proper backlash
Tooth pattern question
Ring gear out too far (excessive heel) how to adjust?
Move ring gear towards pinion, decrease backlash
Tooth pattern question
Ring gear in too far (excessive toe) how to adjust?
Move ring gear away from pinion, increase backlash
