Topography of the brain Flashcards
what are the 3 parts of the brainstem?
medulla
pons
midbrain
what do the brainstem centres produce?
rigidly programmed automatic behaviours essential for survival
which cranial nerves are the brainstem nucleii involved with?
III-XII
what venticle is the medulla cavity?
IV ventricle
what venticle is posterior to pons?
IV ventricle
what does the midbrain develop from?
mesencephalon
what makes up the central cavity of the midbrain?
cerebral aqueduct
what are the functions of the cerebellum?
- Posture maintenance
- Fine tuning motor activity
- coordinates force, direction, extent of muscle contraction
where is the diencephalon?
Deep within cerebral hemispheres, around the III ventricle.
what is the role of the thalamus?
it is a sensory relay station.
what is the role of the hypothalamus?
main visceral control centre & is essential for overall homeostasis
what arteries supply the brain?
two Internal Carotid Arteries
two Vertebral arteries (branches of the subclavian artery)
what is the circle of willis?
Branches of the ICA join with those of the opposite side and with the PCA (branch of the basilar artery) to form a continuous circle at the base of the brain
what is the role of the circle of willis?
This is a protective feature against vaso-occlusion of large arteries.
(branches distal to circle are not protected)
what veins of the brain drain into what?
drains into dural venous sinuses which drain into Internal Jugular Veins
