Topic 9 Flashcards
Describe the 3 phases of earths evolution of atmosphere
Phase 1-volcanoes gave of lots of carbion dioxide, nitrogen and water vapour as well as small amount of methane and ammonia
Phase 2-water vapour condensed to form oceans and then plants absorbed the CO2 and released oxygen
Phase 3-the oxygen built up to allow more complex life to form and got to what it is today-80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen
What is carbon footprint
Carbon footprint is a measure of how much greenhouse gases something produces over its full life time
What are some ways we can reduce carbon footprint
Switch to renewable sources
Higher tax on greenhouse gas emitters
Cap gas emmisions
Capture CO2 and put it back underground as oil wells
Crude oil and coal are
Fossil fuels
What happens when hydrocarbons are burned with enough oxygen
A complete combustion happens
What happens when hydrocarbons are burned without enough oxygen
An incomplete combustion occurs-solid particles (particulates) of soot and carbon monoxide as well as dioxide is released into the air
