Topic 2-C3 Flashcards
How is an ion formed
An ion is formed by an atom gaining/losing electrons to become a negative/postitive ion
How can you tell the charge of an ion
The charge of an ion will be the same as the amount of electrons lost or gained e.g 2+ means 2 electrons were lost
What are the 3 types of bonding
Ionic, Covalent and Metallic
Explain ionic bonding
Ionic bonding is between a METAL and a NON METAL
the bond is made when a transfer of electrons take place
from the metal to the non metal
Explain covalent bonding
Covalent bonding is between TWO OR MORE NON METALS
the bond is made when the atoms share outer shell electrons in order to stay stable
the nuclei are then attracted to the shared electrons causing covalent bonds
Explain metallic bonding
Metallic bonding is between metals.
Metal atoms have delocalised electrons
so when lots of metal atoms are close together the electrons are shared
this causes the nuclei to be attracted to the shared electrons so they bond together.
As delocalised electrons can move, metals conduct electricity well
