Topic 8 - Earth Science Flashcards
What is phase one of the creation of the atmosphere?
Volcanoes give out CO2, steam, methane and ammonia from inside the earth. The steam later condensed to form the oceans.
What was phase two of the creation of the atmosphere?
A lot of the CO2 dissolved into the oceans. Nitrogen gas entered the atmosphere by ammonia reacting with oxygen and denitrifying bacteria. Green plants removed CO2 and added O2.
What was phase three of the creation of the atmosphere?
The build up of oxygen killed early organisms. But it allowed the evolution of more complex organisms. The ozone layer formed , allowing even more complex organisms to form. There is virtually no CO2 left.
What is the greenhouse effect?
The sun gives out electromagnetic radiation. The short wavelengths get absorbed by the earth. The long wavelengths are reflected back. Some of the radiation that has been reflected gets reflected back towards the earth by greenhouse gases.
Why is carbon monoxide poisonous?
Carbon monoxide binds with your red blood cells and never lets go. So the red blood cell can never do its job. If this happens enough your oxygen supply will be reduced.
How is sulphur dioxide released into the atomsphere?
When sulphur impurities are burnt in fossil fuels
What does sulphur dioxide cause?
Acid rain
What problems does acid ran cause?
Causes lakes to become acidic, killing the wildlife.
Kills trees
Damages limestone buildings
Causes metal to corrode
What allowed for complex organisms to evolve?
The build up of oxygen in the atmosphere and the ozone layer forming.
How was nitrogen gas first put into the atmosphere?
Ammonia reacting with oxygen
Where did a lot of early carbon dioxide go?
Dissolved into the oceans
