Topic 7 - Reactions Flashcards
What is the activation energy?
The amount of energy needed to start a reaction
How does concentration affect rate of reaction?
If there are more particles in the same area, two particles are more likely to collide
How does temperature affect rate of reaction?
The more energy particles have, the more they move around. The more particles more around, the higher chance they will collide with each other.
How does surface area affect rate of reaction?
The more area for particles to collide with, the higher chance particles will collide
How does a catalyst affect rate of reaction?
A catalyst lowers the activation energy required for the reaction.
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up a reaction without being used up in the reaction itself
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that takes in energy from the surroundings
What is a exothermic reaction?
A reaction that gives out energy to its surroundings
State the equation for finding the energy change of a reaction.
Energy change = Energy required to break bonds - Energy released to form the bonds
What shows the activation energy on a reaction profile.
The distance between the reactants and the peak of the curve
On a reaction profile, if the products finish below the reactants, is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?
Exothermic
On a reaction profile, if the products finish below the reactants, is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?
Endothermic
