Topic 2 - States Of Matter Flashcards
What does it mean when a substance is pure?
It is made up of only one element or compound
What does simple distillation do?
Separate a liquid from a solution with very different boiling points.
How does simple distillation work?
The solution is heated up, the part of the solution with the lowest boiling point will evaporate. The gas passes into the condenser where it cools and condenses,
What does fractional distillation do?
Split a solution made up of chemicals with close boiling points.
How does fractional distillation work?
The solution is heated up that it all boils. The gas moves up the distillation column until it reaches a point where it cools and condenses. From there it is removed from the column.
What is the mobile phase of a chromatography?
When the molecules can move
What is the stationary phase of a chromatography?
When the molecules can not move.
What is the solvent front in a chromatography?
How far the solvent has moved up the paper
Why does the baseline of a chromatography have to be drawn in pencil?
If pen is used it will move with the solvent. Pencil is insoluble.
What is the filtration phase if water purification?
A wire mesh removes large objects such as sticks.
What is the sedimentation phase of water purification?
Iron sulphate of aluminium sulphate is added to the water, which makes fine particles clump together and fall to the bottom.
What is the chlorination phase of water purification?
Chlorine gas is bubbled through the water to kill microorganisms in the water.
