Topic 8: Acid and Bases Flashcards
Bronsted Lowry theory
Acids are proton donors, and bases are proton acceptors
Amphiprotic
A substance that can either donate or receive a proton
Amphoteric
A substance that can act as an acid or a base
Alkali
A base which dissolves in water
Neutralisation Reaction
A reaction in which an acid and a base react to form salt and water
Indicator
Indicators change colour at different PH’s and are useful to determine the equivalence point.
PH
PH is the logarithmic scale of hydrogen ion concentration acidic below and basic above 7 and neutral is 7
PH meter
An electronic device which measures Ph and is non-destructive (doesn’t change the chemicals)
Universal Indicator
Is a mix of lots of different indicators which is green at neutral Ph, blue at basic Ph and red at acidic Ph. Destructive changes the chemicals its placed in.
Ionic Product Constant of Water
The hydronium ions multiplied by the hydroxide ions that naturally dissociate in wafter and is equal to 1.00 x 10-14 at 25 degrees
