Metallic Bonding Flashcards
What is Metallic Bonding
THE ELECTROSTATIC ATTRACTION BETWEEN positive METAL CATIONS AND NEGATIVE delocalised ELECTRONS
THAT HOLDS THE 3D METAL LATTICE TOGETHER
Why do metals conduct electricity
BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN A SEA OF DELOCALISED ELECTRONS THAT CAN CARRY CHARGE
What is Malleability
MALLEABILITY IS THE ABILITY OF A METAL TO BEND WITHOUT BREAKING BECAUSE THE DELOCALISED ELECTRONS CAN SHIFT AND MAINTAIN A LATTICE STRUCTURE
What effects the strength of a metallic bond?
Smaller the ionic radius of the cations the stronger the bonds, Higher CHARGED IONS form STRONGER bonds
what is an Alloy?
A MIXTURE OF METALS CONTAINING ONE OR MORE OTHER METALS Or NON METALS XD
What is a substitution alloy?
PARENT METAL ATOMS ARE REPLACED BY ANOTHER METAL ATOM WITH A SIMILAR SIZE
What is an interstitial alloy?
Smaller (usually nonmetal) ATOMS ARE ADDED TO THE GAPS BETWEEN THE PARENT ATOMS
