Chemical bonding and structure Flashcards
Intermolecular forces
the attraction between separate molecules
Van de Waals Forces
a group of intermolecular forces that includes a dipole-dipole, ion-induced dipole, dipole induced dipole, and London dispersion forces
London Dispersion Forces
instantaneous temporary dipole attraction between two non-polar molecules caused by the random orientation of electrons.
Ion-induced dipole forces
a weak attractive force that results from the interaction between a non-polar molecule or an atom and an ion.
Permanent Dipole-Dipole Attraction
attractive force in polar molecules. The interaction between the positive and negative poles between two polar molecules.
Dipole-induced dipole forces
An attractive force that results from the interaction between a nonpolar molecule/atom and a polar molecule.
Hydrogen Bonding
Dipole-Dipole interactions between Hydrogen and Fluorine, Oxygen or Nitrogen. Stronger than normal dipole-dipole.
