Thermodynamics Flashcards
Kinetic Energy
The energy that comes from movement. Temperature is the average of kinetic energy between particles
Chemical Potential Energy
The energy that is stored in chemical bonds
Enthalpy
The total amount of energy (sum of kinetic energy and chemical potential energy).
Standard Enthalpy Change of Reaction
The change in heat energy transferred under standard conditions with reactants in their standard state
Endothermic
A reaction in which the energy of the surroundings decreases. Products have higher energy than the reactants.
Exothermic
A reaction in the energy of the surroundings increases. Products have lower energy than the reactants.
Standard Enthalpy of Formation
The energy change when one mole of a compound is formed with everything in standard states
Standard Enthalpy of Combustion
The energy change when one mole of a compound is combusted in oxygen in standard states.
