Bond Enthalpies Flashcards
Enthalpy Profile Diagrams
Diagrams that help us visualise the enthalpy change of a reaction.
Activation Energy
An activation energy is the amount of energy required to break the bonds of the reactants and cause the reaction to occur
Exothermic Reaction
When the energy released from the formation of bonds is greater than the energy required for the breaking of bond
Endothermic
The Energy that is released from the making of bonds is less than the energy required to break the bonds
Bond Breaking
Endothermic Process
Bond Making
Exothermic Process
Bond Enthalpy
Amount of energy required to break one mole of bonds
Average bond enthalpy
Amount of energy required to break one mole of bonds, in the gaseous state averaged across many different compounds with that bond.
Ozone
An Allotrope of oxygen with the formula O3, and has a much lower bond enthalpy than oxygen. This decomposes in UV light. Oxygen combines with free radicals to reform ozone.
