Topic 7 Pressure Flashcards
Pressure
The force acting perpendicular to a certain surface area.
Kilopascal or KPa
One KPa is equal to 1000 Pa
Pascal or Pa
unit for pressure
formula for pressure
The formula for pressure is P= F/a or pressure equals force divided by area
Compression of gas
Gasses are compressible because their particles are so far apart that they can be squeezed together. an example of this is an airbag being compressed when a person hits it.
compression of gas is made possible by 3 things
1. must be enclosed
2. distribute themselves equally among the container
3. the space between the particles is what makes it possible.
compression of liquids
while gasses are compressible liquids are incompressible because their particles are not spread out enough. when they have external force applied to them the liquid transmits the energy.
measuring air pressure
a barometer is used to measure air pressure
