Topic 2- Mixing and dissolving Flashcards

1
Q

Homogeneous mixture

A

This is a mixture in which substances appear as one when mixed. A mixtures that look as if they only have one set of properties, they are blended together to make sure that every sample of the mixture will contain equal amounts. eg. salt in water

Q

heterogenous mixture

A

A heterogenous mixture is a mixture in which two or more particles can be seen when mixed meaning they do not dissolve when mixed. eg. salad dressing.

Q

emulsion

A

when particles in a colloid are dispearced for an even longer period by adding an emulsifying agent to form an emulsion

6
Q

what two things make materials dissolve.

A

Q

solvent vs solute

A

A solvent does the dissolving and a solute gets dissolved. eg. water would be the solvent and salt would be the solute because the salt gets dissolved in the water.

Q

saturated
unsaturated
supersaturated

A

saturated is the max amount of solute that will dissolve in a solvent
unsaturated is when more solute can fit in a solvent and it will continue to dissolve.
supersaturated is to go beyond the saturation point.

16
Q

compound

A

A pure substance made up of two or more types of elements {water, table salt, sugar}

17
Q

solution, aqueous vs non aqueous

A

A homogeneous mixture of two or more pure substances appearing as one {vinegar, clear air}

Aqueous solution ~ a solution with water as the solvent eg} tea

Non-aqueous solution ~ a solution that does not contain water eg} nail polish remover

18
Q

mechanical mixture

A

another word for a heterogenous mixture

19
Q

dissolving

A

breaking up; forming a solution by mixing two or more materials together

20
Q

soluble vs insoluble

A

soluble- able to dissolve in a certain substance

insoluble- unable to dissolve in a certain substance

21
Q

rate of dissolving

A

how fast a solute dissolves in a solvent
