Topic 2- Mixing and dissolving Flashcards
Homogeneous mixture
This is a mixture in which substances appear as one when mixed. A mixtures that look as if they only have one set of properties, they are blended together to make sure that every sample of the mixture will contain equal amounts. eg. salt in water
Heterogenous mixture in which no settling occurs.
When no settling occurs it is called a colloid
heterogenous mixture
A heterogenous mixture is a mixture in which two or more particles can be seen when mixed meaning they do not dissolve when mixed. eg. salad dressing.
emulsion
when particles in a colloid are dispearced for an even longer period by adding an emulsifying agent to form an emulsion
the separate parts of a mechanical mixture
This is called fases
what two things make materials dissolve.
- particles have to be attracted to each other.
2. particles have to be moving.
solvent vs solute
A solvent does the dissolving and a solute gets dissolved. eg. water would be the solvent and salt would be the solute because the salt gets dissolved in the water.
what is it called when a solute can be dissolved in a solvent.
It is called soluble
what is it called when a solute can not be dissolved in a solvent.
It is called insoluble.
what four things effect the rate of dissolving.
- agitation (stirring or shaking)
- surface area
- temperature
- pressure
saturated
unsaturated
supersaturated
saturated is the max amount of solute that will dissolve in a solvent
unsaturated is when more solute can fit in a solvent and it will continue to dissolve.
supersaturated is to go beyond the saturation point.

heterogenous mixture in which particles settle slowly after being mixed
this is called a suspension
Mechanical mixture
heterogenous mixture consisting of two or more pure substances in which the different substances are easy to see.
element
pure substance such as gold iron or silver
