Topic 5 Density Flashcards
Mass
the amount of matter in a substance, measured by a balance
Volume
The amount of space occupied by a substance, measured in litres or cubic units such as cubic centimeters.
weight
The force of gravity exerted on a mass
force
A push or pull, or anything that causes change in the motion of an object.
Gravity
The attractive forces between masses
- causes an object to be attracted to earth.
how to find density
density is mass divided by volume.
how to find mass
Mass is density times volume
how to find volume
Volume is mass divided by density.
Sea water
sea water is more dense than freshwater because more particles are there because of the salt and it is still the same amount of water.
mass and weight
pounds are mass and kg are weight
what is density
Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance. Solids are more dense than gases and gases are less dense than liquids.
what is the expression for density of a solid
g/cm3
density of fluids
g/L
floating vs sinking
An object will float if its less dense than the liquid its placed in,
An object will sink if its more dense than the liquid its placed in.
If it floats its volume is greater than its mass but if it sinks than it mass is greater than its volume.
what determines the density of a substance
The mass and size of the molecules, and how tightly packed they are determine the density of a substance.
do the size of a substance affect its density
The density of a substance is the same no matter the size of the sample.
same volume with different mass
Objects with the same volume but different mass will have a different density.
displacement
A submerged object will displace a volume of liquid equal to the volume of the object.
On earth gravity pulls on an object with a force of what
9.8 N
measuring liquid density
liquid density is measured by a hydrometer
