Computers can be described as
Stand-alone or Networked
Stand-alone computers are
not connected to any other computer or the internet and cannot exchange data with any other computer
Networked computers are
connected to a least one other computer of the internet
Most people will use 2 types of network and these are
LAN and the internet
LAN stands for
Local Area Network
LAN is when at least
2 computers are connected over a very short distance
Internet is when
large numbers of computers can connect to each other using the server of their ISP
A server is a large
computer which controls user access to resources
ISP stands for
Internet Service Provider
ISP provides
access to the internet for a monthly fee. Like Virgin and Sky
Networking computers can be connected to each other using
cables, the internet or by using a wireless connection
Transmission media is the way
computers connect to each other.
For a LAN the computers connect with
an ethernet cable or wifi
For a WAN the computers connect with
fibre optics or satellite
When using cables to connect to the internet a cable called
ethernet is used and it is faster than connecting wirelessly
