Topic 7- Ecology Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
the interaction of of a community of biotic organisms with abiotic components.
What do organisms compete for in an organism.
space water nutrients food mates
What would happen to the rest of the population if there was a change in environment?
it has a knock on effect and any species are affected
what are 5 abiotic factors of an ecosystem?
moisture level light intensity temerature co2 level soil ph
List 4 biotic factors.
new predators
new pathogens
competition
availibility of food
What are the 3 types of adaptations?
`structural
behavioural
physiological/functional
What is a structural adaptation?
features of an organisms body structure such as shape or colour that help them survive or reproduce
What is a behavioural adaptation?
ways an organism behaves so help them survive or reproduce
What is a functional/physiological adaptation?
processes that go on inside an organism to help them survive or reproduce
What are structural adaptations of arctic penguins?
they have a short stiff tail which then can lean back on to stop heat loss through the ground
What are structural adaptations of camels?
large S/A to volume ratio to help them lose heat and stay cool
What are structural adaptations of whales?
thick layer of blubber to retain heat
Do you like whale noises?
who doesnt
What are behavioural adaptations of swallows?
swallows migrate to warmer climates in the winter to avoid cold conditions
What are behavioural adaptations of arctic penguins?
they huddle together in large groups to shield against the wind and prevent heat loss
