Topic 6c- Classification Flashcards
What system have animals traditionally been classified using?
The Linnaean System
What are the groups in the Linnaean system (from largest to smallest)
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
Who proposed the three-domain system and when?
Karl Woese, 1990
Why was the traditional Linnaean system replaced by new models of classification?
Knowledge of the biochemical processes taking place inside organisms developed and microscopes improved allowing scientists to analyse DNA
What are the three groups in the three-domain system? What organisms are found in each?
Archaea- prokaryotic cells that can survive in harsh and extreme environments
Bacteria- true bacteria
Eukaryota- fungi, plants, animals and protists
What is the binomial system?
Every organism is given a two part latin name
What do the two parts of the binomial name refer to?
First is the genus and second is the species
e.g. homo (genus) sapiens (species)
What are evolutionary trees?
Evolutionary trees show how scientists think different species are related to eachother
