Topic 6 - Physical Fieldwork✔️ Flashcards
What was the Enquiry question?
How effective are the coastal managment strategies in Swanage Bay?
What was the study location?
Swanage - Isle of Purbek in dorset
Why was Swanage an appropriate study location?
-is a managble size
-lots of different land uses
-safe location
-beach is not too big
-answers our Enquiry question
Risks and Hazzards with physical field work in Swanage?
-getting lost from the group
-sea
-weather (sunny or raining)
-rocks/cliffs
-ranging pole
Explain why secondary data can be more usefull then primary data to us?
Can support the Enquiry question better because it could have been gathered by other people or companys with more advanced technology so it will be more accurate and we can compare it with our data to get an average
Methodology for wave measurments?
1)We set a timer and in a group of 6 we counted how many waves broke in the 5 min
2)We also placed an apple in the sea to measure long shore drift in 5 min - We placed a ranging pole where we released the apple and then where it was after 5 min and measured the distance between
Equpment for measuring waves?
-timer
-measuring tape
-apple
-ranging pole
Limitations with measuring the waves in that way?
-waste of food
-wind was blowing in an abnormal direction
-hard to keep track of apple
-human error when counting
Methedology for groyne profile?
1)choose which groynes your going to measure (eg every 2nd - 2/4/6/8/10)
2)measure the drop from the top of the groyne to the beach on the opposite side of the groynes
3)measure width of beach - sea to sea front wall
Equipment for measuring groyne profile?
-measuring stick
-tape measure
Limitations with the method for groyne profile?
-could not measure all the groyne without going in the sea
-people in the way
-human error when measuring
Methedology for beach profile?
1)We place a ranging pole where the sea comes in and another where there is a big change in angle/incline and measured with a clinometre
Eqipment for beach profile?
-Clinometre
-tape measuring tape
-ranging pole
Limitations with beach profile?
-sea coming in quickly
-people could be in the way
Negative Impact of costal managment on costal processes?
Has caused coastal processes like long shore drift to erode other areas faster as the groynes stop sand being transpoted down the coast - so the beaches further down decrease in width - which speeds up rate of erosion for the cliffs
