Topic 6 - Human Fieldwork✔️ Flashcards
Enquiry question?
How and why are there variations in quality of life for different areas within bournemouth
Study location?
Boscombe - part of a bournemouth town - south coast of england
Name a risk with the fieldwork?
-could get lost from the group
-be careful with other people
-wear sunscreen/hats/glasses if hot
What is quality of life?
The genreal well-being, happiness and contenment of an indivisual, family or society eg amount of green space , quality of vehicles
What is standard of living?
Refers to the level of wealth, comfort, material goods and necessities available to an indivisual eg feeling of safte or healthcare
Explain fully how a biopolar survery works?
1)go to a location and give it a reading for noise/green space/services/traffic and saftey
Equpment:biopolar survey table
Limintaions:weather/could be dangrous/human error
Explain how a traffic count would be carried out?
1)everyone choose a different vehicle then set a 5 min timer and count how many of your vehicle goes past
Equipment:stopwatch/result table
Limitations:human error/where we are located
Explain how to carry out mood mapping?
1)using a mood board we choose the mood that best repersents that locationlocation(eg scared)
Equipment:moad board/pen
Limitations:personal opinion/human error
Explain how to carry out housing quality survey?
1)visit 4 chosen houses which are all different and rate them on quality/features/apperance
Equipment:table/pen
Limitations:hard to judge/opinion/human error
What are the pros and cons of annotated photographs?
Pros:secondary data so you dont have to take the picture or be there
Cons:not your picture you do not know if it is 100% the right location or what might be arround the house (hard to judge a whole area with just a still image not 360 degrees)
What location had a worse standard of living and quality of life
Boscombe west - Churchill gardens
What location had a better standard of living and quality of life
Boscombe east - shelley Park
What is primary data?
Information that is collected first-hand eg photographs, tallies or measurements
What is secondary data?
Information that someone else has previously collecte and made available eg on the internet
Name three sampling techniques?
-random sampling
-systematic sampling
-stratified sampling
Explain random samplinng?
Selecting a person or location at random - is unbiased as particular people or places are not specifically selected
Explain systematic sampling?
Collecting data in an ordered or regular way eg every fifth person
What is statified sampling?
Dividing sampling into groups eg three sites from each section of coastline - it is possible to combine stratified samping with random and systematic sampling
What is stratified random sampling?
Random samples are taken from within certain categories
What is stratefied systematic sampling?
Regualr samples are taken from within certain categories
What are some risks with human fieldwork?
-people
-weather - sunny or stormy
-getting lost
What is boscombe east deprivation index?
22,482 th
What is boscombe east deprivation index?
336th
What are some features of Boscombe east?
-average age is 36 years
-84% very good health
-50% housing owned
-58 crimes
-life expectancy 10 years more then boscombe west
What are some features of Boscombe west?
-average age is 38 years
-75% very good health
-24% housing owned
-489 crimes
-life expectancy 10 years less then boscombe east
Boscombe east average house price?
£800,000
Boscombe west average house price?
£189,000
How did we measure enviormental features in Bosombe East and West?
-systematic sampling measured on a main road and measured 7 different factors:noise/greenery and open space
-measured using bi-polar scale9
What is quantitative data?
Usually consists of factual information that can be counted and used in fieldwork
what is qualative data?
Data is more opnion-based but is still useful for geographic investigations eg mood mapping
How did we measure quality of life in Boscombe east and west?
Systematic sampling - we placed a dot in the middle of the map of boscombe east and boscombe west - we then found the closest building and took a photo and annotated the diagram with factors
What factors did we annoate the diagram with?
-house type
-house density
-green space
-air quality
conclusion for the data we collected on the bi-polar?
Boscombe east scored a total of 21 on the bio-polar survey where as boscombe west scored 2 showing more noise, vandilism and less services for boscombe west and therefore possibly a worse quality of life
conclusion for the data we collected on housing quality survey?
On the housing quality boscombe west scored -11 which suggests the houses are smaller not as looked after and lack green space this is compared to Boscombe east which scored 18 however there is the issue of personal prefrence and what is available for us to see
What factors with the housing quality survey did we measure?
-windows
-paint/brick work
-garden
-tidyness
-security
Benefit of quantative data?
Can easily be compared with other data
Benefit of qualative data?
Qualitative research allows you to ask questions that cannot be easily put into numbers to understand human experience - more opinion bases so there is no right or wrong
Issues with quantitative data?
- less detailed picture
- can be misleading
- limited scope of data collection
Issues with qua
- can be time consuming to collect
- creats subjective information points
- often difficult to replicate
