Topic 6- Genetic Engineering Flashcards

Q
What is genetic engineering?
A
-viruses and plasmids are known as vectors when they introduce new genes to cells
-we use vectors to transfer genes to another
The genetically modified organism gains a useful characteristic or makes a valuable product
1
Q
Where can genetic information be transferred?
A
- from one cell to another
- this can happen naturally
- eg. Viruses insert genes into the dna of a host cell
- bacteria pass genes naturally from one to another in plasmids
- viruses and plasmids are known as vectors when the introduce new genes to cells
2
Q
How is the process of genetic engineering done?
A
- to identify the required gene in the source chromosome
- the gene is cut out using an enzyme
- the gene is inserted into a bacterial plasmid
